New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi will meditate at Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari from May 30 to June 1 after the Lok Sabha election campaign is over. As reported, in the last phase of Lok Sabha polls in 2019 PM Modi went on a trip to the Kedarnath temple and meditated at a cave.  Prime Minister’s passion for yoga and meditation has always inspired people to indulge in such activities to promote mental health.

In today’s fast-paced world meditation plays a major role in people’s lives. The trend is seeing an upward spiral, especially among the younger generation. The practice of mediation majorly helps to ‘know yourself better’ and ‘become more aware mindfully’. The journey of meditation helps you to stay in the present, without judgement it helps you connect with your thoughts and sensations. Well, many people get confused between yoga and meditation. How are they different from each out?

In a conversation with News9, Yoga expert Yogesh Chavan said, “Yoga was always seen as Yogasanans only, meaning physical postures. But real Yog ka much more as in Ashtanga Yog, of which Pranayam (breathing exercises) and Dhyan (Meditation) are also very important and result-oriented. Especially with the world experiencing COVID, it was well understood that those who lacked immunization power suffered the most. Yoga is a 100 per cent sure shot giver and improver of self-immunisation. Thus Yogasanas is one-eighth part of the whole Yoga.”

According to some studies, like yoga meditation helps to reduce blood pressure levels and heart rate throughout the day, minimise stress and improve stress management skills.

How is meditation different from yoga for our health?

According to Dr Chavan, “Meditation is a part of Yoga as a whole. If you mean how it is different from Yogasanas (physical postures) then the question is right. Yogasanas help in physical progress. Stamina building, strengthening, flexibility etc. Whereas Meditation helps to improve concentration thus helping to improve mental health, increase willpower and better decision-making ability.”
